As a major producer and consumer of methanol globally, China's methanol production capacity accounts for over 50% of the world's total. Currently, the proportion of coal-to-methanol in China's methanol production process accounts for over 70% of the production capacity.

In recent years, air pollution has received increasing attention, prompting China to promote the diversification of green energy. Methanol, as a promising green energy source, has been widely applied in transportation sectors such as methanol vehicles, heavy trucks, and ships, as well as in industries like boilers, industrial kilns, and stoves, and in civilian sectors, with pilot projects around methanol fuel gradually increasing.

Since 2012, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has organized methanol vehicle demonstration projects in parts of Shaanxi, Shanxi, Gansu, Guizhou, and Shanghai, achieving significant results. Currently, methanol taxis have been fully promoted in Guiyang, Guizhou Province, and Xi'an, Shaanxi Province. According to Liu Shengquan, there are now over 6,000 methanol vehicles operating in Xi'an, with 20 methanol refueling stations, all operating well and with strong driving power.

In addition, methanol can also be used as fuel for large ship gas turbines, with seven dual-fuel methanol-diesel container ships already in operation worldwide.
