Urotropine is a polycyclic heterocyclic compound with a structure similar to adamantane.

Urotropin, also known as hexamethylenetetramine or hexamethylenetetramine, is a polycyclic heterocyclic compound with a structure similar to adamantane and a molecular formula of C6H12N4. Urotropin is a white crystal that can be prepared by reacting formaldehyde with ammonia. The molecule contains four fused triazacyclohexane rings. Limited solubility in water, easily soluble in most organic solvents. Urotropin has a wide range of applications. It can be used as a raw material for organic synthesis, analytical chemical reagent, antibiotic, fuel, and has many applications in chemical production. Urotropin reacts with fuming nitric acid to produce the highly explosive "whirlwind explosive" RDX.

Some of the main uses of Urotropin are listed below:

Medication

Accelerator for rubber vulcanization

Preservatives in cheese

Curing agent for phenolic resin

Fuel, shared with 1,3,5-triaohexane, does not produce smoke or ash during combustion

Adhesive

Corrosion inhibitor

Protein modifiers

Synthetic RDX (RDX)

Production of deodorants and hair styling agents
